Marriage and civil union

In Québec, a couple may choose to live in a de facto union, get married or enter into a civil union.

If you wish to officially unite, you must choose between marriage and civil union. The rights and obligations that stem from these two types of unions are the same. There are differences, however, with respect to the required age and the dissolution process.

In order to be recognized, your marriage or civil union must comply with various conditions with respect to your spouse and yourself, the preparations and the conduct of the ceremony.
