The
Regulation
Respecting the Distribution of Information and the Protection of Personal
Information
requires
each body subject to the
Act
Respecting Access to Documents Held by Public Bodies and the Protection of
Personal Information
(R.S.Q., c. A-2.1) to
publish certain information on its website.
Although the Directeur de l'état civil
is under the purview of ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale, it has its own website.
Therefore, some of the information covered by the Regulation is
found there. To access documents whose disclosure is compulsory under
the Regulation, other than those available on the Directeur de l'état civil
website, we invite you to visit
the section L’organisation et ses engagements on the Québec.ca website
(in French only).
We must not only comply with the provisions of the Act Respecting Access to Documents Held by Public Bodies and the Protection of Personal Information, but also abide by the provisions of the Civil code of Québec governing the keeping and custody of, and access to, the registers for which we are responsible, not all of which are subject to the Act Respecting Access.
The Québec civil status register contains information regarding births, marriages, civil unions and deaths that occurred in Québec or pertain to person domiciled there. The register can only be consulted through an application for a certificate, a copy of an act or an attestation. Otherwise, the register may be consulted only if special permission is granted by the register of civil status.
The register of officiants is an online service that allows future spouses to ensure that the officiant they have chosen for their marriage or civil union is authorized by the registrar of civil status to perform the ceremony on the scheduled date.
You cannot consult the register to find a potential officiant, but rather to check that the person you have chosen is authorized.
Requests for access to documents held by the Directeur de l'état civil and covered by the Act Respecting Access to Documents Held by Public Bodies and the Protection of Personal Information must be submitted, by mail, to the person in charge of access to information at ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale.
Attention!
No application for a certificate, a copy of an act or an attestation can be sent to the above address. For information on how to submit one of these applications, go to the section entitled Certificate and copy of an act or Attestation.
