Register of competent authorities in matters of Aboriginal customary adoption, Aboriginal suppletive tutorship and recognition of Aboriginal customary adoption outside Québec

This register contains the list of competent authorities designated by an Aboriginal community or nation to issue Aboriginal customary adoption certificates, Aboriginal suppletive tutorship certificates and acts recognizing an Aboriginal customary adoption outside Québec.

The register contains the contact information of the competent authority and, where applicable, the person(s) authorized to represent it, the nation or community(ies) for which the authority is designated and the type(s) of certificates authorized to be issued.

If you wish to make an Aboriginal customary adoption or have an Aboriginal suppletive tutorship certified, or are seeking the recognition of an Aboriginal customary adoption outside Québec, you must apply to the competent authority designated by your Aboriginal community or nation. When the competent authority pronounces or recognizes an adoption or suppletive tutorship, it issues a customary adoption certificate or a suppletive tutorship certificate and sends it to the Directeur de l’état civil. A new act of birth will be drawn up in the case of an Aboriginal customary adoption. Subsequently, an application may be filed with the Directeur de l’état civil for a birth certificate, a copy of an act of birth or a copy of an Aboriginal customary adoption certificate or Aboriginal suppletive tutorship certificate.
