Terms and conditions with respect to certificates

It is now possible to request a birth, marriage, civil union or death certificate that does not specify the sex of the person concerned.

To do so, complete an application form for a Certificate or Copy of an Act and enclose a letter stating that you do not want the sex specified on the certificate.

You can also apply for a birth certificate on which the designations of “father” and “mother” are replaced with “filiation”.

To do so, complete the “Application for a Certificate or Copy of an Act of Birth” form and enclose a letter stating that you wish to replace those designations with “filiation”.

Note that certificates with these specific features are subject to the normal processing time. The accelerated processing service does not apply.

Important

The Directeur de l’état civil cannot be held liable for problems encountered by the applicant when submitting to government departments and bodies a certificate that does not specify the sex or on which the designations of “father” and “mother” are replaced with “filiation”.
